This is an excellent example of methodology, going from a family legend, through censuses, newspaper accounts, books, court records, city directories, cemetery research, vital records and more to piece together in considerable detail the story behind the family legend. It is an engrossing tale, and a wonderful well-documented example of genealogical research. ~
LIGHTNING DOWN: A WORLD WAR II STORY OF SURVIVAL

A fascinating read that contains multiple present day insights from the pilot who survived some very brutal treatment. Some details are deeply disturbing, but I believe we all need to know the real facts as told by someone who was there. The book contains a great weaving of the storyline from multiple perspectives and is well researched from outside sources. It ends well and beautifully. I gained knowledge to imagine the possible experiences of my POW uncle, who did not tell many stories or details. The gentle and kind spirit of this American hero shines through. ~

Emma Gatewood wasn’t famous, but her quiet strength and determination feel epic. The book brings you back to a different time in America, with all its rough edges and unspoken rules. She’s not my ancestor, but reading her story made me think deeply about the lives my ancestors lived and what they had to carry to survive. ~
